About The Event
Photos clockwise taken during a tour of the museum in January. The Museum at Eldridge Street sanctuary has a magnificent modern stained glass window designed by artist KiKi Smith in collaboration with architect Deborah Gans; with additional original stained glass and woodwork throughout; the Zodiac Mosaic Floor designed by Mark Podwal (1945-2024); the “First Light: Birth in the Jewish Tradition” exhibit on Jewish childbirth rituals from the 19th century; Mark Podwal, "Pharaoh's Daughter"; Tobi Kahn, "YLMAH" ✨ Note: The painting above, "Esther before Ahasuerus" is by Artemisia Gentileschi, Italy, 1620s; The most famous woman painter of the seventeenth century, Gentileschi worked in Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, and London. This painting, among her most ambitious, represents the Jewish heroine Esther, who appeared before her husband, King Ahasuerus of Persia, in order to stave off a massacre of the Jewish people, breaking with court protocol and thereby risking death.
